HiSET Program (Formerly the GED)

The HiSET Program prepares students ages 16-22 to take the High School Equivalency Test, or HiSET. Students receive classroom instruction, tutoring, as well as individual support to ensure they are not only able to pass the HiSET exam, but also prepared for life after high school. College preparation, job readiness skills, and life skills are key components of the program.

This is how the HiSET Program can help you.

Mission

To offer a high school alternative that provides individualized educational opportunities, in combination with career exploration and self- development. A respect for individuality and the personal development of each student is the foundation of the HiSET Program. Student potential is supported and developed through their educational experience.

Who can attend?

To qualify for the HiSET Program, students must be referred by their school counselor, through Pinkerton Academy Continuing Education (PACE) or referred from a participating high school. Students must be at least 16 years old, and students under 18 must parental support to participate in this program, as well as to take the HiSET exams. HiSET Pretests are given at The Upper Room, a Family Resource Center, 36 Tsienneto Road in Derry. Once all documentation is provided by sending school, students are registered to take the pretests. Scores from pretests determine program eligibility.

Why is it unique?

The HiSET Program is unique because it focuses on students in an individualized manner. Case management is offered to assist with barriers to students’ success in school. Students are offered support in meeting their own unique life challenges. A smaller educational setting and small class size allows students who prefer this type of setting a place to gain their education. Before program completion, students develop a post graduate plan for life after high school which may include work, training, the military or college.

How are classes set up?

HiSET classes meet Monday-Friday; there are 2 different 3-hour sessions. Classes promote learning of all information needed to pass the five sections of the HiSET exam: Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and Writing. Students master the skills necessary to pass the HiSET exam through classroom instruction, individual or small group tutoring and independent work.

How do I enroll?

For more information, speak with your School Counselor, or the Pinkerton Academy Continuing Education, PACE, Director. If pre-test scores indicate that the HiSET Program can support your educational goal, you will be set up with an intake meeting, and can begin classes once your plan is established and approved by the referring school.
