Their goal is to raise awareness of family strengthening protective factors that ensure all Granite State kids have a safe, stable, and nurturing environment.

“Training for this bike ride is like parenting; it’s so much work, it’s a challenge most of the time, and yet fills me with joy too! This bike ride is about raising awareness of all the magnificent work family resource centers are doing not only for our HCS community, but across the state,” Penny “the Ryder” Vaine says.

The Ride for Resilience physically connects critical family strengthening programs and services that all Granite State parents, caregivers, and families need to build resiliency.

The Family Resource Center at HCS, Healthy Starts will be the STARTING LINE for this 2022 Ride for Resilience. The ride will start at 6:30 am on Friday. ~ The Upper Room connecting in the community~

Pictures taken of Susan Norton and Weekend Events in Sandown and Salem.

Derry, NH, August 29, 2022

The summer has been busy for staff at The Upper Room, preparing for the start of a new school year for some programs, revising current programs and curriculum, as well as staff being active in community wide events. “Over the last few weeks staff have participated in various town wide community events, with the goal of being in the communities we serve, and getting to know people, hearing what they need, and making sure they are aware of the services and programs we offer” States Brenda Guggisberg Director.

The Upper Room expanded it’s reach this past year taking on a PDG partnership with Launch Manchester. The work is to build systems of care within communities to support young children and their families.  Getting into the communities is one way the efforts are being managed, staff are getting to know people with young children, they’re informing, sharing, and listening.   This past weekend, staff member Dr. Susan Norton distributed over 100 books, shared 250 characters (animal and insect) bubbles, distributed 50 Strengthening Families coloring books and crayons, 78 raffle tickets and fielded dozens of inquiries about how families could get more information on The Upper Room. Free frisbees, key chains, brochures, snacks and drinks were shared at the booth held at Salem Field of Dreams, Londonderry Old Home Days and Sandown Old Home Days. And of course, multiple conversations with families. Well over 500 connections were made in Salem on Saturday!

The Upper Room will also host tables at Derryfest and in Chester at community fairs. We encourage those seeking information about our programs and services to please stop by our tables.  Anyone seeking information about how The Upper Room can be a resource please reach out to 603-437-8477. This fall open house events are also being planned so families or community members can stop by and gather information and meet someone from our staff.

This years event was sponsored by Moos, Ice Cream, Fun Bounce, the Jason R Flood Memorial Pizzastock kids, and included Trading faces for face painting, as well as visitors from WellSense health Care, Boys and Girls Club, New Futures, and Launch Manchester and Launch Derry.  Ice Cream, Music, face painting, bounce house, yard games, activities and drawings, offered everyone attending something to do.

Derry, NH, July 18, 2022

Earlier this spring The Upper Room, a Family Resource Center, began a project to create new gardens in it’s yards.  With the help of The Derry Garden Club members, support from the Marian Gerrish Community center who sponsored the cost of the raised beds, which teens built, The Upper Room embarked on a summer project that is literally thriving.   Teens from the Community Service Program built 2 large, raised beds with the help of board member Rob St. Amand.  Next, the participants in the On My Own group, a partnership between The Upper Room and Marion Gerrish, planted several types of vegetables with the direction of the Derry Garden Club.

“The project was set in place to teach skills to young people, that we hoped would instill some long-term skills for those who partake in the garden this year” States Liz Graziano who oversees both Community Service and On My Own.  “We hope that by giving students these opportunities we offer them ideas, and strategies to take into adulthood, which could lead to lifetime habits that offer many benefits” offers Brenda Guggisberg Upper Room Director. “With a mission that includes providing education, to lead to self-sufficiency, we could not think of a better way to support this than to offer this opportunity this summer.” Guggisberg continues

Over the summer, teens will continue to care for the gardens, and provide healthy vegetables to the agency’s food pantry.  The Upper Room offers 17 programs, many which support teens, and families, and often that intersect with one another. The organization celebrates its 36th anniversary this summer, serving the area, and relies on unique projects and partnerships such as this one, to build opportunity for individuals, which promote problem solving, skill building and are hoped to last throughout a lifetime.

The Upper Room gives credit and thanks to everyone who helped this project come to fruition. It certainly does take a village, and this project would not have come together without the leadership of Liz Graziano, and the partnerships with the above-mentioned partners, including Derry Feed who provided soil for the beds.

Derry, NH, July 15, 2022

The Upper Room, a Family Resource Center, received a donation this week to support it’s Teen Talk drop-in group.   The Upper Room staff participate in the events that Pizzastock presents as way to offer resources, and information to teens and young adults, or their families who are playing and competing in their events.   “Being part of these events allows us to be right where the young people are, right where their families are, and we can answer questions, provide resources, and be a visible resource they come to recognize and trust if they are in need”, states Brenda Guggisberg Executive Director of The Upper Room.   “When the community partners together to create networks, we are all better for it, we can rely on each other, understand the capacities of the services and providers, and gain knowledge about how to access individual programs and services.” Guggisberg continues.

Pizzastock is an annual tradition that has happened for the last 6 summers, and also makes an appearance in December with the .5 editions of each year.  These events raise funds through admissions and raffles, and in turn are returned to community organizations to support programs and services related to the well-being of others.  Doug and Danielle Flood are reaching out with music, to help young people be connected to one another, to find others who have similar interests and to help those struggling with mental health concerns to get the help they need, by providing dozens of local organizations at the events. Bringing young musicians together to create their art, be a place of community and providing a space for connection, is the Pizzastock model.  The Jason R Flood Memorial is a tribute the life of Jason Flood, Doug and Danielle’s son.

The Upper Room looks forward to continuing to offer Teen Talk as one of it’s youth services.  Call 603-437-8477 x 129 for more information about Teen Talk.  There will be a planned community event between the two this fall for teens and their families, to view the documentary created by the Flood’s as a tool to educate others around mental health.  Details to follow.

Derry, NH, July 5, 2022

The Upper Room, a Family Resource Center in Derry was visited by members of the First Congregational Church of Pelham today, thanks to a parish driven donation, to help support the Fund a Family donor program.

Through a month-long effort in June, the members donated 4,500.00 in support of The Upper Room’s programs and services.    “The Fund a Family Donation, made sense to me, it showed me how my dollars could help” stated FCC’s leader  Carlos Jauhola-Straight.   Joined by fellow members Debbie Schnieder  and Kathy Neskey, the group presented a check to Brenda Guggisberg, The Upper Room’s Executive Director.

The group discussed regional efforts that support individuals and families and the hope that assisting people toward self sufficiency has on the work.   Ideas, and resources were shared and once again demonstrates the value of community members and organizations working together to strengthen the larger community and those living within it.  “This is a very large donation, and we are so grateful for the gift this offers to so many seeking support and services”, states Guggisberg.   “We want to assure that any family needing services, is able to get them, no matter what, this is a wonderful level of support”.

Future conversation is expected in support of families living in Pelham and surrounding areas.

46 students completed the requirements this year, with 20 participating in the ceremony.   ~Anna Willis Memorial Scholarship Awarded to NEXT Charter High School Senior ~

Derry, NH, June 7, 2022

The Upper Room Board of Directors is pleased to present it’s fifth annual Anna Willis Memorial Scholarship to a Next Charter School senior, Sierra Saucier.  This scholarship was created after the passing of one of the late founders, Anna Willis in December of 2017.   To honor her work and her tireless commitment to making the world a better place, the board of directors began the Anna Willis Memorial Scholarship.    Applicants are those who have shown some commitment to their community through service, and who have a plan for a future to improve their world. Anna’s family felt that character was important when selecting it’s candidates, and volunteerism and leadership were important factors in determining this.     Saucier, a Derry resident applied for the scholarship, among a large pool of applicants from Salem, Windham, Next, Pinkerton, and Londonderry High Schools.

Sierra is excited to exit high school and attend Plymouth State this fall, to earn a degree in Criminal Justice,.  Her desire to possibly volunteer while in college learning more about the juvenile system, proves to her deep commitment to both education and service to her community. “We are excited to continue to offer this award to local students, in honor of one of our founders”. Remarked Charlene Puzzo, Board President

Sierra will graduate this week from NEXT,  and The Upper Room Board and Staff wish her the very best of luck in his endeavors.

The  sixth annual Anna Willis Memorial Scholarship Award will be announced in early 2023 for eligible applicants.

~The Upper Room celebrates Dr. Susan Norton ~

Derry, NH, May 9, 2022

The Upper Room, a Family Resource Center in Derry’s Susan Norton, is donning a new title, Dr. Susan Norton a member of The Upper Room’s team, coordinates the Greater Derry Launch Pad, an initiative in partnership with Launch Manchester, building community wide infrastructure between schools and community-based agencies to support the development of young children.  In her dissertation, Dr. Norton focused on classroom environment.

Dr. Susan Norton’s work is focused on the early childhood education workforce. Her research explored the impact of nature-based preschools (NBPs) on the level of job satisfaction of early childhood educators. The result of the study indicates that NBPs provide a model to increase the level of job satisfaction and wellbeing amongst ECCE teachers. Additional findings suggest an increased propensity of nature-based educators to pursue a sustained career in ECCE with their intention to stay in a nature-based school or center. NBPs report having fewer challenging behaviors in the classroom in tandem with children being calmer, happier, and possessing a more positive disposition because of their immersion in nature. Additionally, when the students came inside, they were more focused, balanced, and able to stay on task. Incorporating aspects of nature-based education into existing frameworks would be beneficial for all.

Brenda Guggisberg Executive Director stated, “We are fortunate to have Susan part of our region, she is passionate about children and education, and has wonderful relationships with ECCE providers, community agencies and families also engaged in positive thinking about the opportunities that offer children long term success in school, and access to the services. This 14 town region is lucky to have the experience of a dedicated individual who deeply believes in children.”

Through the remainder of the year, Greater Derry Launch Pad will be at town, and community events for people to stop by and gather information, and ideas to support families with young children.  Additionally, Dr. Norton is working to create an Early Childhood Educator Workshop series to offer Early Childhood Educators support and ideas for positive classroom activities.

Parents and Caregivers of young children interested in being part of the Parent Advisory Committee please reach out to Susan Norton at 603-437-8477 x 120  or email snorton@urteachers.org   Meetings are held Quarterly.

~ The Upper Room offers Anger Management Facilitator Training~

Derry, NH, May 4, 2022

The Upper Room, a Family Resource Center in Derry is happy to announce it will once again offer a summer Train the Trainer for interested individuals looking to implement Take Control- A Teen Conflict Management Course.  On July 12th and 14th from 8:30 – 4 PM attendees will learn how to facilitate an evidence based strategy that assists teens with identifying their triggers, managing the responses, and improving their communications with family and friends. This will be held at the center located at 36 Tsienneto Road Derry NH.

In 2011,  Upper Room staff developed, and took a curriculum to the Service to Science process, and created the first and only NH Evidenced Based Program to address the social and emotional needs of youth related to anger.  The 12 hour course, leads participants through exploration, education and skill building, to approach anger differently.   The current facilitators of the Summer Train the Trainer, are Elaina Wheaton and Michelle Brauch,  2 of the original developers of the curriculum with in depth knowledge and commitment to the wellbeing of youth in their ability to manage their emotions.

“Take Control has been an effective tool in helping young people look at how they are managing their emotions, and how they can shift responses to their reactions, to communicate without violence”, states Brenda Guggisberg, Executive Director of The Upper Room.  “We have seen overwhelmingly good results from helping teens create positive strategies to challenges through this program”.

This program will host 12 participants who will attend both days of training, agree to run the program with fidelity, and who will have access to technical assistance over the course of the first year.  This is ideal for school personnel, or area agencies that work with teens and youth. Starting in April the group will return to an in person format, and offer teens a chance to be together once again.   April will host a Monday after school group 2:30 – 3:30 PM at The Upper Room, 36 Tsienneto Road Derry, NH with a focus on Yoga and Mindfulness.  Facilitated by a certified Yoga Instructor and Staff member of The Upper Room, Liz Graziano, attendees will meet, and participate in activities that offer quieting of the mind, and relaxation for the busy brain, along with some fun teen chatter.  No former experience is needed, and no materials are required to attend.

Staff are eagerly planning monthly topics and look forward to bringing a robust list of topics to teens. “With the world opening back up, we are excited to move this group back to in person, to offer teens a chance to be in spaces together, sharing common interests, and connecting with one another.  We are so grateful for the continued support from MGCC, in support of teens and their wellbeing.” States Brenda Guggisberg, Executive Director of The Upper Room.

The Adolescent Wellness program is a comprehensive program, offering teens access education, counseling, skill building, and connections to others. Teens are offered ideas in managing anger, substance misuse, academics, and community service.  ~  The Upper Room offering outside approach to teen wellness~

Derry, NH, January 5, 2022

The Upper Room, a Family Resource Center in Derry is ready to launch a Walk and Talk Group, designed by their staff member Seren Elizabeth, who is a Mental Health Counselor with the agency. After working extensively with teens, and especially during this time, Elizabeth recognized that the isolation, and lack of stimulation was playing a toll on many of the teens she has been working with. After engaging in her own research and training, Seren developed a program where teens will gather, walk, talk, journal and practice mindful mediation to reduce stress, and improve mood.

Being offered for 6 students at a time, one group geared toward female teens the other toward male teens, the group is being offered as a way to connect teens to a trained professional, who also wants connection between the members, and aspires to hold a place for meaningful discussions and fun.

The group will use the Londonderry Rail Trail as it’s place to take steps, and journey together. Thanks to the offer of use of snowshoes by The YMCA of Londonderry, if trails are snowy teens can borrow snowshoes for the walk. Teens can expect walking, talking journaling, breathing exercises. Journals, and snacks are provided for all enrolled. A one-time 20$ fee covers the costs of supplies, and any student needing a scholarship will be granted one. The first group will meet January 22, 2022, from 9 AM to 12 Noon. The meeting place will be The YMCA of Londonderry 206 Rockingham Road, Londonderry. The group will meet once a month.

To register e mail Seren Elizabeth at selizabeth@urteachers.org or call 603-437-8477 x 128. Space is limited to 6 people for each group. “Providing unique ideas to support teens in building the tools they need to manage the daily impacts of life is critical”, states Brenda Guggisberg The Upper Room’s Executive Director. “I am always excited when one of our staff has a great idea, this one is so positive”.
